Getting Started with Genome Mate Pro, Part 22 — Updating Your GMP Version

New releases to GMP are published several times per year, so updating your copy of the program should become a standard part of your routine. This lesson will describe how to install the update (it’s easy!) and some basic housekeeping to ensure GMP is running optimally.

The best place to learn about updates is in the Genome Mate Pro Facebook group.

Download and Install the Latest Version of GMP

  1. Open your current version of GMP and back up your database. (File > Backup Database)
  2. Quit GMP.
  3. Follow the instructions in Part 1 of this series to download and install the latest version of GMP and to get the updated “User Guide”.
  4. Read the summary of the features and fixes in the latest version of the program:  https://www.getgmp.com/release-notes.
  5. Open the new version of the program. You will be greeted with a message asking if you want to open an existing database.  Click YES.
  6. Select the database you want to use and click OPEN.
  7. You can now delete the previous version of GMP from your hard drive.

Update Your Import Templates

Sometimes (not always) a new release to GMP also includes updates to the built-in import templates.  Such updates are required when the testing company or GEDmatch changes their data format. When in doubt, update your templates when you install a new version of GMP.  It only takes a minute and can save you heartache down the line. If you are certain that the update you are installing does not have changes to the templates, you can skip this section.

  1. In GMP, go to the OPTIONS tab then select IMPORT TEMPLATES at the top left.
  2. Right-click anywhere in the right-hand panel on the IMPORT TEMPLATES subtab to see a list of options.  If you have not created custom templates, select “Remove All Templates” from the list of options that appears. This doesn’t delete the built-in templates from within GMP; it just deactivates them. However, if you have created custom templates (e.g., for MyHeritage), “Remove All Templates” will delete the custom ones, so you will want to “remove” the built-in templates one by one.  Right-click on a template and select “Remove Selected Template”.  Repeat as necessary.
  3. In the center panel, select the templates you use, then click “Activate Selected Templates”.  For GEDmatch, do this once for the “Regular” templates and again for the “Tier 1” templates.

You’re done!

    1. There should be a subscription field to the right of the blog text. If you’re on a phone/pad, you may need to scroll down below the comments.

  1. I’ve just (I think!) installed the updated version but I don’t get the prompt message to open an existing database. All my uploaded information for my kits is there so is this necessarily a problem? Also, I have never been able to access the Help page (nothing happens when I click the Help tab) – is there a link to a download of the User Guide?

    1. I just upgraded as well and didn’t get the prompt. Not to worry!
You can download the User Guide in the same place you downloaded the program itself.

  2. I’m kind of lost on the import templates. I did everything you said through Lesson 11, which only involved GEDMatch. Are you saying now in step #2 that I’m to select remove all templates? I don’t know this program well enough to just start deleting stuff.

    1. You can’t delete the built-in templates in GMP, so don’t worry. The reason I suggested going through those steps is that sometimes a new version of GMP will include improvements to the templates. The “remove” and replace steps allow you to overwrite the new, improved template with the previous one. (If you’ve created your own templates — which most beginners haven’t – you should avoid removing those.)

  3. Hi just read all of your lessons on GMP. Great. Really well explained. No new ones for
Sometime(a year). Any plans to finish the series?
    John
